In October, Brittany Jackson of Madison opened the Molly Rose Consignment shop in Madison. She carries women's clothes and accessories, furnishings and home accents.
A little over a year ago, recent college grad Brittany Jackson sat at her desk job in New Haven with dreams of opening her own business.
With a love of shopping, fashion and home decor, Jackson opened Molly Rose Consignments, an upscale resale shop with hometown charm earlier this fall.
Jackson is a Madison native whose new business has strengthened her hometown roots: “Since I grew up here and played sports, so many parents of my teammates have stopped in and even brought in merchandise to sell. It feels very supportive.”
The 24-year-old Daniel Hand High School alumna (class of 2008) graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 2012. While at Hand, she played varsity soccer and basketball and was a starter in both her freshman year and became team captain of both sports in her senior year. She went on to play Division I soccer in college and started on the CCSU women’s soccer team as a freshman and became captain her senior year. After graduation and armed with a criminal justice degree, she found jobs scarce. Through a temp agency she landed at the Knights of Columbus in New Haven for about a year.
“Driving in and out of New Haven and sitting at a desk all day just wasn’t for me. I knew I needed an occupation that I really enjoyed,” she says.
At the store, customers will find both new and gently-used merchandise tastefully displayed throughout the store. Jackson carries clothing for both women and juniors, accessories, home decor and furniture. When accepting consignment items, Jackson looks for name brands or a special quality that will catch a customer’s eye.
With apparel especially, “It’s important that clothing is currently in style and in good condition. Blazers are popular in the store right now. You can wear them dressed up or with a pair of jeans. They complete an outfit,” says Jackson.
Another popular item that’s been selling quite well is furniture, especially for new homeowners or apartment dwellers looking to decorate on a budget.
Jackson carries a wide range of brands at a price point well below retail value.
“Once you start shopping with us retail shopping will never be the same,” says Jackson. Labels such as Ann Taylor, BCBG, Coach, Prada, Three Dots and Free People fill the shop at a fraction of their original prices. Other brands in stock include Anthropologie, Ugg, Badgley Mischka, Kate Spade, Betsey Johnson and True Religion. Many items have never been worn and still have their price tags. For example, Jackson noted a brand new Brighton watch in its original packaging, and a never-been-worn pair of Burberry loafers in their classic plaid print, as well as a selection of packaged perfumes. Customers will also find beautiful refinished furniture, artwork and handmade jewelry by local artisans.
