Mark Boughton is hoping a fellow local official -- one from the opposite end of the state -- will help him ride into the governor's office.

Boughton, the Republican mayor of Danbury, endorsed former Groton mayor Heather Bond Somers as his choice for lieutenant governor. In Connecticut, primary voters vote for governor and lieutenant governor seperately, so the two mayors won't formally be on a ticket. But Boughton's endorsement makes it clear that strong mayoral leadership will be a central theme of his bid to unseat Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, himself a former mayor.

Boughton and Somers held a news conference Tuesday in Groton to make the announcement.
