Danbury Mayor and candidate for governor Mark Boughton introduced former Groton Mayor Heather Somers as his running mate Tuesday. Besides an ally to help him bridge a gender and geographic divide, who is Somers?

Notably, Somers is a descendent of founding father Roger Sherman. Sherman has deep ties to the state—serving as the first Mayor of New Haven, a member of Congress and the only person to sign the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Many places in the state and city of New Haven are named for him.

Somers is the mother of three—two college aged students and a 3-year-old child.

She holds a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Connecticut.

Groton has an at-large council of government, which elects a Mayor among its council members. Somers was elected Mayor in November 2011. She lost the mayorship when the Democrats took control of the council last fall, but retained her seat on the council.

Somers grew up in the town she presided over as mayor.

She’s an entrepreneur who founded a medical device manufacturing company. She’s now the Vice President of International Sales and marketing for a medical device company headquartered in Illinois.
