A New Swimwear Store Opens in Greenwich
When we heard about the new swimwear store Everything But Water (“swimwear and resortwear shopping destination,” according to the press release) opening tomorrow in Greenwich, our first thought was “Wow, great!” Our second thought was of how this might affect one of our favorite Greenwich shops, Tahiti Street, also a destination for swimwear and resortwear. Everything but Water was to be located on Greenwich Avenue, too, so it couldn’t be that far away . . . But when we checked the Tahiti Street site for the address, we found this: “Tahiti Street is Now Part of Everything but Water.”
That made us a little sad. Yeah, we know, time marches on, all good things must come to an end, etc. But it’s just one more Connecticut original gone, replaced or gobbled up by a bigger entity. (There are 67 Everything but Waters across the country, including one at Westfarms; the headquarters is in Orlando.) That’s one of the things we’ve always liked about Greenwich: Sure there are lots of big, glitzy names (Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, LaCoste, Tory Burch), but there are also plenty of homegrown, one-of-a-kind shops like Mis en Scene, Betteridge, Mitchells and . . . Tahiti Street. Andrea Bisordi opened the perennial Best of Connecticut winner 23 years ago, and we’ve enjoyed watching it grow and prosper. Good luck to you, Andrea, in whatever you do next!
That being said, the new shop (at the same address) does have a Connecticut-specific interior, with clapboard walls, weathered-gray floors and cabana changing rooms inspired by the Greenwich Yacht Club. And the selection is amazing, including a mix of swimwear, resortwear and accessories by Ben-Amun, Bleu | Rod Beattie, Carmen Marc Valvo, Cleobella, Clover Canyon, Eberjey, Gottex, Heidi Klein, Huit, Ishvara, Jets, Josa Tulum, Karla Colletto, L*Space, La Blanca, Letarte, Lisa Curran, Maryan Mehlhorn, Milly, Nanette Lepore, Robin Piccone, Seafolly Australia and Trina Turk.
For the opening of the new store tomorrow, Everything But Water will host an afternoon of “tropical play,” from 12 to 5, hosted by leading swimwear designer Karla Colletto. According to a press release, "Customers will enjoy island-inspired drinks and personal fittings with the designer, and receive a Votivo candle with every purchase, while supplies last."
