No Cheers for These Americans

Are we supposed to be rooting for American tennis players competing in the U.S. Open in New York this week?

Sorry, but I'm not feeling any love for Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey, two Yanks who stiffed New Haven's Pilot Pen tournament last week and left a lot of paying customers feeling jilted (not to mention the Pilot Pen organizers).

Both Fish and Querrey waited until the last minute to drop their bad news on New Haven, and it doesn't seem there are any repercussions for their turning their backs on "commitments" they made earlier in the summer. There should be, and certainly the players should be less cavalier about their ungracious, unprofessional behavior. After all, it's not like tennis is enjoying a high point in popularity these days.
