Our Historic Moment: Gun Control

Connecticut's congressional delegation, especially its senior members Larson and DeLauro, are experiencing one of those rare moments in public life when history has been thrust upon them.

Because of the unspeakably tragic events of the past 24 hours in Newtown, there has never been a better moment for meaningful legislation regarding guns, and especially assault weapons, to be passed and signed by the president.

Public opinion is galvanized. The NRA is back on its heels. Even NRA supporters in Congress might be persuaded to take their filthy hands out of the lobby's pockets.

Now is the time to strike, and who better to do so than Connecticut's delegation in both the House and Senate?

John Larson and Rosa DeLauro have tremendous seniority in the House. They have clout. They know the ins and outs of the institution. They are sympathetic to the cause. Now is the time to use all they have learned in order to fight the gun lobby, get legislation passed and stamp their names into the history books.

You who represent us in Washington: Leave the prayer and reflection to others. It's time to get to work.
