Dinner Theater Alfresco
If you believe a meal without vino is like spaghetti without meatballs, then you’ll eagerly imbibe Nonna’s Summer Wine Party, at the Outdoor Garden Theatre of Consiglio’s Restaurant in New Haven. Penned by Weston writer Elizabeth Fuller—author of the off-Broadway play Me and Jezebel—and directed by Joel Vig (late of Broadway’s Hairspray), Nonna is a rollicking interactive musical farce revolving around the title character’s quest to marry off her ditsy twin daughters of a certain age Bianca and Rossa, whom she refers to as “the fruits of my labor.” Set to a soundtrack of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Louis Prima, the show is preceded by a five-course prix-fixe dinner that features penne alla vodka, chicken Florentine and Godiva chocolate tiramisu.
The show is a follow-up to last summer’s hit The Luigi Board, also written by Fuller. “We had a full house every night,” says Trish Consiglio. “People would bring their spouses and then return with another group of friends. Some came as often as five times.” That may be partly due to the heady romantic aura of the garden, says Consiglio. “It feels like you’re on a patio in Tuscany, surrounded by flowering plants, vine-covered trellises and white lights.”
Nonna premieres June 12 and runs every Fri. and Sat. through Sept. 5, with Sun. performances beginning July 11. Dinner $54.95 (tax and tip not included); reservations required. For info, call (203) 865-4489 or visit consiglios.com.
