Musical Madness
Mad Bomber, a riotous musical based on the real-life story of Waterbury resident George Metesky, who terrorized New York City during the 1940s and '50s, has its world premiere at Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury June 2-26. The play, penned by Connecticut Magazine editor Charles Monagan, features a score composed by Richard DeRosa (Fold, Spindle and Mutilate; Aches and Pains), with lyrics by Monagan and choreography by Janine Molinari; Semina De Laurentis directs the production.
Metesky, a disgruntled Con Edison employee, terrorized New York City with a series of bombings, blasting public places from Grand Central Station and the New York Public Library to the Port Authority and the subway system. While Metesky eluded the authorities, he created a sensation throughout the city's newspapers. The explosions injured many but never killed anyone, and continued for 16 years before he was finally caught in Waterbury.
Monagan brings the story to life with a cast of 24 in the two-act musical, which opens on Christmas Eve 1956 at the height of the bombing panic in New York City. "Mad Bomber is about Manhattan and Waterbury in the 1950s, and the way the reporters, cops and politicians responded to, and triumphed over, the terrorist in their midst," Monagan says. "There’s a central love story and big dance numbers and lots of humor. I’m delighted with the way it’s turned out."
