All Creatures Great and Small

Since joining the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 1994, President/CEO Wayne Pacelle, 45—a New Haven native and Yale University alum—has become a pretty controversial figure. He's been widely acclaimed for his role in the passage of a number of federal statutes protecting animals, including laws to ban the sale of videos depicting animal cruelty and to require government agencies to include pets in disaster planning. One of the HSUS's greatest achievements under his watch was the investigation of cruelty to animals at California's Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company, which resulted in the largest beef recall in American history and calls for slaughterhouse inspection reform.

On the other hand, some animal lovers have been less than charmed by Pacelle and the HSUS's role in what they see as the attempted "redemption tour" of NFL star—and convicted-on-state-and-federal-charges dogfighting felon—Michael Vick. Of late Vick has been collaborating with the organization on its community-based outreach programs to discourage at-risk youths from becoming drawn into the dogfighting world; love him or hate him, to date he's addressed more than 10,000 kids.

We're guessing that all topics will be on the table during Pacelle's whirlwind Connecticut talk-and-sign tour this weekend to promote his well-praised first book, The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them (William Morrow; $26.99). Here's the schedule:
