East Haven's Sugar Bakery Introduces Take 32™, Its Cupcake Tower to Go

The Take 32™ package.

When I'm nestled all snug in my bed on Christmas Eve, the only sugarplums that dance in my head are those made at East Haven's Sugar Cupcakery & Bakery. The mother-daughter team of Carol Vollano and Brenda DePonte creates the rich, colorfully buttercream-topped cupcakes of my childhood fantasies, in 36 flavors every day—and 75 in total—from favorites like Black & White (a stunning devil's food) and Lemon Drop to more exotic choices like Toasted Almond, Mint Chocolate Chip and a whole repertoire of seasonal specialties. It's no surprise that the bakery is a winner of the Food Network's Cupcake Wars—while each of its treats is a meal in itself, one (or even a dozen) is seldom enough.

With that in mind, Sugar has just unveiled its latest product concept, the Take 32™ portable cupcake carrier and display tower. Perfect for holiday parties, special gifts, corporate meetings, very small wedding receptions or high teas, the recyclable package contains 32 cupcakes ready to be popped out and devoured without any additional fuss or bother. Towers can be pre-ordered or picked up on the spot. If you pre-order, you have four combinations to choose from: the Take 32™ Sampler (offering two each of 16 pre-selected flavors like Chocolate Fudge, Boston Cream, The German and Snowball), the Seasonal collection (with eight cupcakes in each of four flavors appropriate to the time of year) and Celebrate Pink or Celebrate Blue (showcasing color-accented cupcakes and pink- or blue-ribbon trim). All options retail for $129. If you're too busy to pick the order up yourself, no worries: the bakery will deliver, for a sliding fee depending on the destination. If this seems like extraordinary service for a bakery, remember that Sugar runs two cupcake trucks to various Connecticut towns several days a week, driven by the "Sugar Daddies": Vollano and DePonte's husbands as well as DePonte's father-in-law. (Pre-orders should be phoned in 24 hours in advance for a pick-up and 48 hours for delivery.)

Should you choose to pick up a Take 32™ tower on the spot, you have an alternative option: Your 32 cupcakes can be any flavor in Sugar's bakery cases that day, whether you want four, or 16, or 32 different kinds. If your eyes turn out to be bigger than your stomach for sweets, rest assured that the cupcakes will stay fresh in the refrigerator for two to three days. Plus, you still have other, more modest options—Sugar's popular Cupcake Bouquet (12 for $40, also available for delivery) and this holiday season's Christmas 6-Pack, festively decorated treats in Gingerbread, Egg Nog, Candy Cane and three additional flavors for $20 (order by Dec. 21 for pickup on or before Dec. 24). Still, keep Mae West's immortal words in mind: Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.
