Dueling Julia Child Dinners in Westport—Magnifique!

Attention, foodies and Francophiles! This week you can feast on dishes created by the one-and-only, late, great Julia Child at back-to-back dinners in Westport. Chefs Pietro Scotti of Da Pietro’s and Bryan Malcarney at Blue Lemon are each offering three-course prix fixe dinners based entirely on recipes by the inimitable star of “The French Chef.”

Coincidence? Mais non. The two dinners, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, and Thursday, Jan. 23), are part of an ongoing month-long “Dine Around Town with Julia” event that kicked off on Jan. 8 with a sold-out dinner at Post 154, followed by a Jan. 15 fête at Rive Bistro. (The series winds up on Jan. 29 with a dinner at Spotted Horse Tavern.)

But back to the matter at hand: At Da Pietro’s, chef Scotti is offering three choices for first course: warm spinach salad with lardons and mushrooms, wild mushrooms en croute or moules au gratin. The main course stars Child’s traditional cassoulet, boeuf Bourgignon and poached salmon with sorrel. Dessert is apple tarte tatin, chocolate mousse or crêpes Suzette.

For “A Night With Julia” at Blue Lemon the following night, chef Malcarney’s is preparing four classic appetizers—steamed mussels, Blue Lemon chicken liver pâté with candied pistachios, mixed field greens and a duo of soups: carrot and potato-leek served “cheek-to-cheek,” and three entrées—grilled hanger steak with shiitake and cremini mushrooms, Julia’s favorite cassoulet and fillet of sole stuffed with lump crabmeat. Dessert is tarte tatin with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream, chocolate soufflé and crème brûlée.

“Dine Around With Julia” is an offshoot of the Westport Reads program sponsored by the Westport Public Library. The featured book this month is My Life in France, the 2006 autobiography Child wrote with her grand-nephew, Alex Prud’homme, which provided much of the inspiration for the 2009 film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep.

Both dinners are at 7. The price is $100, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit Westport Public Library.
