Tiny Goshen Celebrates Its Impressive Array of Gourmet Bounty in Farm-to-Table Dinner

Anyone who loves gourmet food, cherishes anything locally grown and celebrates the farm-to-table movement has also surely daydreamed longingly about experiencing (or experiencing once again) globally lionized cynosures of the living-richly-and-locally ethos, hotspots like Provence or Tuscany. But who knew that one of Connecticut's smallest towns (population 3,203) is also a hilltop, windswept locale with a local bounty to rival that of even the legendary market towns of Europe.

The Goshen Agricultural Council is holding an exclusively "Goshen grown" farm-to-table dinner this Saturday, Sept. 14, and the event is making clear just how impressive the town's range of offerings has become. Without leaving the borders of a still-rural and beautiful town (without a single traffic signal and clinging to its old-fashioned rotary at the junction of Routes 4 and 63), you can find everything from artisan chocolates and cheeses to local wines, heirloom tomatoes, farm-raised lamb, and bison, along with blueberries, raw honey, fresh eggs and maple syrup.

Altogether, it's far more than enough for a beautiful meal; enough perhaps for sustaining a sustainable lifestyle.

"Begin your evening with a horse drawn carriage ride to the Woodridge Lake Clubhouse," begins a description of the event on the Goshen Agricultural Council's website. "Make your way to the bar for your first taste of Goshen’s finest wine offerings. After you have chosen your wine to begin your evening make your way to the deck of the clubhouse for hors d’oeuvres. On the deck you will enjoy the music of Leo Normandin and his jazz ensemble as you begin to enjoy Goshen’s own Mohawk Bison, Artisanal cheeses made fresh at Thorncrest Farm and other hors d’oeuvres featuring fresh produce and other farm fresh foods grown exclusively in Goshen.  After an hour or so of enjoying the sun setting over Woodridge Lake come on in to the Clubhouse to begin your dinner."

"Let dinner begin," the narrative continues. "For your first course you will enjoy an heirloom tomato and fresh Mozzarella salad with mixed field greens and a basil vinaigrette. Dinner will continue with your entrée which will include a sampling of  (all Goshen raised) Free Range Chicken Veronique with native corn relish, Grilled Pork Medallions with a blueberry port reduction, and Longhorn beef tips with a Miranda Vineyard red wine reduction along with roasted fresh seasonal produce from West Street Farm, Windy Hill Farm and Stonedrift Farm."

"Hope you saved room for dessert," it goes on to say. "The dessert course will consist of blueberry tarte with blueberries from Old Barn Farm served along with a 'Land of Milk and Honey' milk shooter and a chocolate chip cookie made with chocolate from Milk House Chocolates. There will also be special chocolates from Milk House Chocolates to take home and enjoy as well as a gift bag filled with special items exclusive to Goshen for you to take home as a thank you for joining us on this special evening!"
