Off the Beaten Path: Sculpture, Art at Slater Memorial Museum, Norwich

Considering the Slater Memorial Museum stands prominently at the center of the stately grounds of Norwich Free Academy, it’s remarkable that more people don’t know about this nearly 130-year-old gem of a museum, open to the public year-round. At the heart of the museum (the building itself a gorgeous homage to Romanesque architecture) is a remarkable collection of more than 150 life-sized plaster casts taken directly from original Classical and Renaissance sculpture about a century ago, when such ambitious efforts were commonplace. The result is that you can get within inches of heralded pieces such as Michelangelo’s “Pieta” here, an opportunity not available with the actual work as it is kept behind bulletproof glass in Italy.
