Gillette Castle, Once Home of ‘Sherlock Holmes’, Opens Season of Tours

Once upon a time, so the story goes, a famous stage actor and playwright was sailing on the Connecticut River when he saw a group of seven stunning hills overlooking the river. The actor had been planning on building a retirement home on Long Island in the Hamptons but seeing these seven summits, called The Seven Sisters, rising above the banks of the river changed his mind. This would be the site of his new home. See the other stories in our ongoing Connecticut Castle series.  Over a five-year span between 1914 and 1919, atop the southernmost of the Seven Sisters, the actor designed and built a house of stone and steel that was like no other. This weekend will bring the 150th anniversary commemoration of the horrific battle of Cold Harbor, which on its very first day led to the death of some 140 soldiers in the Connecticut Second Heavy Artillery. Most of the men came from Litchfield County towns.

Whaling Ship Charles W. Morgan Sailing From Mystic on Historic Voyage

America’s once mighty whaling fleet used to number more than 2,700 vessels; today only the Charles W. Morgan remains. On Saturday, May 17, the whaleship, which was built and launched in 1841 and is owned by Mystic Seaport, will embark on a voyage for the first time in nearly 100 years.
