Torrington Statutory Rape Cases Continue to Play Out in Court

Torrington Statutory Rape Cases Continue to Play Out in Court

A former Torrington High School football player appears on track for trial on accusations of statutorily raping a 13-year-old girl on two occasions. He appeared before Judge John A. Danaher III for pre-trial motions Wednesday.

Joan Toribio, 18, 330 Highland Ave., Torrington, is facing two counts of second-degree sexual assault and three counts of risk of injury to a minor. Toribio is one of four former Torrington High School football players facing sexual assault charges.

Rape allegations against Torrington High School football players received national attention, after a March 20 Register Citizen article detailed Twitter cyber-bullying against the two 13-year-old victims.

Codefendant Edgar Gonzalez, 18, of the same Torrington housing complex, pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault in June, as part of a plea agreement. Gonzalez is awaiting a September sentencing.

Two more of Toribio’s codefendants remain unnamed, and their cases are sealed, because both were 17 years old at the time of the alleged incidents.

Toribio has been released on $100,000 bond since his February arrest. Toribio’s Torrington-based defense attorney, Charles Brower, has declined to comment on the case since its inception.

Hoping to avoid a painful and potentially risky trial, prosecuting State’s Attorney Terri Sonnemann has extended at least one plea agreement offer to Toribio. Thus far, negotiations have not resulted in a deal that would exchange Toribio’s guilty plea for less jail time than he could face in a trial conviction.
