Middletown resident Tyler Renfro, 17, who has been dating Kendel Souza, 18, for only three months, saved Souza from drowning at Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, Rhode Island. Renfro and Souza are graduates of Middletown High School's class of 2013.
A recent high school graduate in Middletown saved his girlfriend from drowning over the weekend when a beach trip took a turn for the dangerous.
Tyler Renfro, who is turning 18 this Friday, pulled his girlfriend, Kendel Souza, out of a churning riptide after the undertow knocked her off her feet and threatened to carry her out to sea.
The couple was taking a weekend beach trip with another friend, Aisling O’Grady, to Misquamicut State Beach in southwestern Rhode Island.
“Driving up, we hit a rainstorm—already I was thinking it’s not going to be the greatest beach day,” Renfro said Tuesday.
But by the time they hit the beach in the late morning, the skies had cleared, although the lifeguards were out and warning swimmers against going out too far.
“I had known ahead of time that Kendel was not the strongest swimmer—but I knew she was tough, and could hold her own in the water,” said Renfro.
