A “Justice for Trayvon” rally organized by five local groups begins at 11 a.m. Saturday outside the federal building at 157 Church St. in New Haven.

The rally is organized by the regional chapter of National Action Network, the state chapter of the NAACP, the Greater New Haven Clergy Association, the New Haven Hispanic Clergy Association, and the Christian Community Commission, organizers said in a release.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, president and founder of NAN, announced this week that “Justice for Trayvon” vigils would be held in 100 cities nationwide Saturday.

The intent is to press the federal government to investigate civil rights charges against George Zimmerman, the release said.

“How many more times do we have to rally around justice for our children? How many more courts will free overzealous vigilantes who gun down unarmed American citizens and cry self defense?,” the Rev. Boise Kimber, pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church said in the release. “Black and Brown American teens should feel confident that the American justice system also works for them; the Zimmerman acquittal tells them otherwise.”
