HARTFORD--The number of housing permits issued by the majority of Connecticut communities closed out 2013 with a whimper after a growth period for much of the year.

The 286 units issued housing permits issued in December represented a 45.4 percent decline from the number issued during the same period in 2012, according to the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. A total of 4,027 units were issued permits during all of 2013, a 2.7 percent decrease in the number issued during all of 2012.

Even with the disappointing end to 2013, the total number of units issued housing permits last was the state’s second best showing since 2008 when 4,910 units were issued permits.

Robert Wiedenmann, president of Sunwood Development in Wallingford, said the housing permit numbers at the end of 2013 reflect a concern that consumers have about their economic futures.

“I still feel like we’re headed in the right direction in the long term, but when people are uneasy, they tend to shy away from big ticket purchases,” Wiedenmann said Wednesday.
