No Winter Whiteout but Ongoing Power Blackout at Powder Ridge in Middlefield

Sean Hayes, left, owner of Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort in Middlefield and investor, John Gramegna are frustrated with the lack of cooperation from CL&P and AT&T for the past nine months as contractors continue to work with generators. Hayes is currently waiting for 500 yards of power lines to be restored by the utility companies. Hayes has spent over $100,000 repairing and replacing utility poles on the property and completed the upgrade of 13 transformers because CL&P did not want to provide the same power voltage that was provided to the previous owners.

The new owner of the Powder Ridge ski area in Middlefield is vexed by his continuing inability to get electrical service restored to the ski resort.

Sean Hayes, who also owns the Brownstone Exploration and Discovery park in Portland, said he remains puzzled as to why nothing has been accomplished in the nine months since he first contacted CL&P to request restoration.

“This is absurd,” said an irate Hayes. “I don’t understand why we’re being forced to wait this long.”

But a spokesman for the utility company says the fault lies with the town and not with CL&P. An electrical contractor has completed the necessary installation work at the site, according to spokesman Mitch Gross. Now, the utility is waiting for Middlefield to inspect the work, Gross said.

“Once the town completes its inspection, we can move forward with serving (the site) with power,” Gross said.

While he accepted CL&P’s explanation, Hayes said he does not understand why the utility hasn’t done a better job of communicating the situation to him.

“Why wouldn’t somebody tell the customer about this?” Hayes asked. “(CL&P) is the vendor, not the town. Get us a meter, and let us plug in so we can become a customer.”

Hayes said he will pursue that issue with CL&P.
