Rep. Esty Votes with Republicans Requesting Special Counsel Investigate IRS

Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Esty voted with the Republican majority in the house Wednesday to ramp up the investigation into alleged targeting of conservative groups by the IRS. Esty, D-5, joined 25 other Democrats and the Republican majority to direct US Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate the scandal. “I strongly believe our government regulatory agencies must be neutral and nonpartisan. It is completely unacceptable for the Internal Revenue Service or any other federal agency to target groups or individuals based on their political views. Public confidence in the impartiality of tax collection is extremely important to the integrity of our system,” Esty said in a statement Thursday when asked about her vote. Conservatives...

Gubernatorial hopeful Boughton says GOP needs to embrace Connecticut’s cities

With less than three weeks until the Republican nominating convention, gubernatorial hopeful Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton is wrestling for delegates, ambling toward a primary where he hopes he can be his party’s ambassador to the cities, a weak spot for the party in previous elections. “The Republicans have done a horrible job at communicating their message in the cities. ... I think that part of the problem is Republicans have not respected the people living in the cities and just don’t understand where they’re coming from,” Boughton said. Earlier, he said of himself, “This will be one governor who will pay attention to our cities, who will understand the issues there.” Boughton, one of several Republican nominees seeking to unseat...

Mark Greenberg Calls for John Kerry's Resignation

A Jewish candidate for Congress in Connecticut joined some conservative leaders Tuesday in calling for the resignation of Secretary of State John Kerry following his controversial comments about the potential for Israel to become an “apartheid” state. Mark Greenberg, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the 5th Congressional district to run against incumbent Democrat Rep. Elizabeth Esty, said Kerry should resign “or at the very least be removed from the peace process.”  “Israel is our greatest ally in the Middle East and one of our most reliable allies in the world.  Israel is a democracy in a part of the world where democracies are rare and unlike many of its neighbors, Israel allows religious freedoms, and treats...

State Cancels $55 Tax Rebate

The $55 tax rebate announced as a stepping stone to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s bid for re-election is no more. State Budget Secretary Ben Barnes told legislators in a letter Monday that despite original optimism about the state budget, they have not received enough back in taxes to follow through with the proposal—nor do they have enough to make a donation into the state’s pension fund. Instead, all surplus funds will be put in the rainy day fund. The initial proposal put some money in the rainy day fund, gave some back to taxpayers, and some to the pension fund. Malloy had been widely criticized by Republicans since the first mention of the $55 give back, with Republicans calling it an “election-year gimmick” and questioning whether there was any...
