Sen. Beth Bye Picked to Replace New Haven Mayor-Elect Toni Harp as Budget Chair

Sen. Beth Bye Picked to Replace New Haven Mayor-Elect Toni Harp as Budget Chair

For the first time in a while, both co-chairs of the General Assembly's appropriations committee aren't representatives of New Haven.

State Sen. Beth Bye, a West Hartford Democrat, will succeed Toni Harp as the Senate chair of the committee. Another New Haven legislator -- Rep. Toni Walker -- is the House chair of the committee.

Harp is leaving the legislature to serve as mayor of New Haven. Before Walker, Harp served as co-chair with state Rep. Bill Dyson.

“Beth brings passion and an incredible work ethic to the position,” said Sen. Donald E. Williams Jr. (D-Brooklyn), President Pro Tempore who made the appointment, in a statement. “She’s also committed to a collaborative approach. Succeeding Toni Harp is no easy task but I know that Beth will do a terrific job.”

In his statement, Williams said additional revised committee assignments will be announced at a later date. Bye’s position becomes effective New Year's Day.

“I am honored that Senator Williams has placed his trust in me to oversee this incredibly important position,” Bye said in a statement. “The state budget is really a statement of public policy priorities. Toni Harp leaves a great legacy as co-chair of Appropriations and I’m excited to meet this challenge and follow in her footsteps.”

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy also issued a statement supportive of Bye’s appointment.

“I want to commend Senator Williams on his selection of Senator Bye to chair the Appropriations Committee. I have an immense amount of respect for the knowledge and passion with which Beth carries out her work in the Senate—a respect I know many of her colleagues in the General Assembly also share. Beth is a great choice to co-chair this important committee and I look forward to continuing our work together.”
