In bid for Lt. Gov., Heather Somers Dumps Mark Boughton

Republican candidate for Lt. Gov. Heather Somers has dumped her unofficial running mate, choosing to instead qualify for the state's public finance grant herself and enter the Republican primary.

Somers, the former Mayor of Groton and current member of the town council, had paired up with Republican candidate for governor and Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton. The two planned to pool their money to qualify for a public grant from the state.

Both Boughton and Somers received enough delegates to qualify for the Republican primary last weekend. The primary will be held on August 12.

“My decision to pursue a primary for the office of Lieutenant Governor on my own is a reflection of my support at the State Republican Convention at which I won nearly 1/3 of the delegate votes. Those votes represented a broad cross section of supporters from all of the respective candidates for Governor," Somers said. “I have great respect for Mark Boughton, Tom Foley, John McKinney, Joe Visconti and Mark Lauretti. Any of them would be a better Governor than Dan Malloy. As such, I feel it best to forge my own path in the primary to serve as Lieutenant Governor."

Though Boughton endorsed Somers as his lieutenant governor pick, the two could only run on a ticket together should they win the party nomination out of the primary. However, because both are angling for the state's public financing grant, they could have pooled their money to qualify for the grant earlier on. State Sen. John McKinney, who is going to primary to be the Republican nominee for governor, paired up with former U.S. Comptroller David Walker in his bid for lieutenant governor, though both plan to qualify for the grant separately they said.

Somers needs to meet a $250,000 threshold in qualifying donations to receive the $1.2 million grant.

State Rep. Penny Bacchiochi is not paired with a gubernatorial candidate, and was the nominee out of the convention last week. Tom Foley, the 2010 GOP pick for governor was again the party's nominee out of the convention this weekend and has not endorsed anyone for lieutenant governor.
