Trumbull First Selectman Timothy Herbst is exploring a run at statewide office, including a look at the office of state treasurer, he announced in a press release late Sunday night.

Trumbull is a microcosm of the state of Connecticut both in its diverse makeup and desire for strong services and a quality of life at an affordable price, Herbst said in the press release. “We must restore the promise of Connecticut just as we have restored the promise of Trumbull. In these challenging economic times, we need leaders who are willing to make the tough decisions, forge consensus and protect the money of the people we serve.”

Herbst plans to qualify for public campaign funds should he decide to run. He says his decision is a result of encouragement and support from people across the state.

The first selectman was elected to his third term in November with nearly 70 percent of the vote.

Should he decide to enter the race for state treasurer, Herbst would face current State Treasurer Denise Nappier. Nappier, a Democrat has served in her role since 1999.
