Feds Close Campaign Finance Probe
According to several reports, the Department of Justice’s investigation into the campaign finance scandal that derailed Chris Donovan’s bid the 5th district has been closed.
Donovan, the speaker of the house at the time of the initial investigation, will not be charged in the matter.
Eight individuals were charged in the campaign scandal for conspiring to hide the source of $27,500 in campaign donations to Donovan’s campaign for the 5th District U.S. House seat. The donations were made in hopes that Donovan would kill legislation aimed at closing tax loopholes for roll-your-own tobacco shops. Donovan eventually lost the primary to Elizabeth Esty, who went on to beat Republican Andrew Roraback in the general election.
