Someone's Polling Esty v. Greenberg in the 5th District

Someone's Polling Esty v. Greenberg in the 5th District

With Election Day a little more than eight months away, internal polling is underway in Connecticut's fifth congressional district, where freshman Democrat Elizabeth Esty is running for a second term.

A source with knowledge of the polling said pollsters are testing a matchup between Esty and Republican Mark Greenberg, a businessman making his third run at a congressional seat. Spokespeople for both the Esty campaign and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee declined to comment, but two sources with knowledge of the situation said they believe the polling is being conducted by Democrats.

An official with the Greenberg campaign declined to comment. A regional spokesman with the National Republican Congressional Committee said the group was not conducting polls in the fifth district.

According to a potential voter who took the survey, pollsters are asking respondents for their opinions of Esty and Greenberg, and which of the two they would vote for if the election were held today. Sal Lilienthal is also a Republican candidate in the fifth district, but is not mentioned in the questions being asked.

Esty has been preparing for a fight against Republicans since she narrowly edged Republican Andrew Roraback in 2012.

The Democratic hold on the 5th district is relatively new. Before Esty’s predecessor Chris Murphy, now U.S. Senator, claimed the seat in 2006, it had been held by Republicans for 16 of 22 years, dating back to the election of John Rowland in 1985.

Esty beat Roraback by fewer than 3 percentage points in 2012, and that was with Barack Obama atop the Democratic ticket.

Given the likely dip in Democratic turnout in the district's cities, Republicans have targeted the fifth as one of the top pickup opportunities in the country, and likely the best opportunity of the five seats in Connecticut, all of which are held by Democrats.
