Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti has withdrawn from today's Republican gubernatorial primary debate.

Lauretti was scheduled to be among five candidates participating in the debate, the first of the primary campaign. But Matt Grimes, secretary of the Brookfield Republican Town Committee, which is hosting the debate, said Lauretti told debate organizers he was withdrawing to attend a fundraiser.

Tom Foley, the GOP's nominee against Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in 2010, is also skipping the debate. State Senate Minority Leader John McKinney of Fairfield, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, state Sen. Toni Boucher of Wilton and former West Hartford town councilman Joe Visconti are all attending the debate, which starts at 5 p.m. in the Brookfield High School auditorium.
