Dan Debicella: Not worth it for GOP to shut down government over Obamacare

Count GOP congressional candidate Dan Debicella among those who thinks House Republicans were wrong to demand the repeal or defunding of Obamacare in exchange for funding the government.

Debicella, a former state senator, is staging a second bid for the U.S. House seat in the state's fourth district, which has been held since 2008 by Democrat Jim Himes. Debicella lost to Himes in 2010.

Appearing on WFSB's "Face the State" program, Debicella was sharply critical of Himes. He said Himes was as much to blame for the lack of bipartisanship as Tea Party conservatives like U.S. Rep. Michelle Bachman of Minnesota, and criticized Himes for spending too much time helping the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raise money and not enough time working on legislation.

He was also, critical, though, of the tactics used by House Republicans, who are taking the bulk of the blame for the shutdown as it nears its third week.

"We're not going to be able to repeal or defund Obamacare as long as President Obama is in office," Debicella said. "As it relates to the shutdown ... This thing's gonna be a disaster, but you don't shut the government over it."
