State Cancels $55 Tax Rebate

The $55 tax rebate announced as a stepping stone to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s bid for re-election is no more. State Budget Secretary Ben Barnes told legislators in a letter Monday that despite original optimism about the state budget, they have not received enough back in taxes to follow through with the proposal—nor do they have enough to make a donation into the state’s pension fund. Instead, all surplus funds will be put in the rainy day fund.The initial proposal put some money in the rainy day fund, gave some back to taxpayers, and some to the pension fund.
