Mitch Albom Coming to New Haven to Talk About Phone Calls from the Deceased

Mitch Albom Coming to New Haven to Talk About Phone Calls from the Deceased

Mitch Albom, journalist, author, playwright, radio host, musician and founder of seven charities, brings a wide variety of potential topics to Southern Connecticut State University’s Lyman Center at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday — one day after the publication date of his latest book, “The First Phone Call From Heaven.”

The New Jersey native and Detroit resident, who still writes for the Detroit Free Press, can talk about sports reporting, seeing his books turn into TV movies or playing in a band with Dave Barry and Stephen King. But the new book should be high on the list.

Albom will take questions from the audience and sign his book at the general admission event presented by WSHU Public Radio Group and SCSU. Tickets are $25 ($5 for students with ID) and include a copy of the book.

Asked about his SCSU talk format, Albom said he likes to touch on themes of his writing, the late professor he wrote about in “Tuesdays With Morrie” and how 20 years ago he would probably be talking about “the red dog defense” at a sports banquet instead of novels, belief and the afterlife.

“I want everybody to know that I’m not there as a self-help person, and I’m not a guru,” Albom said last week in our first phone call from Detroit. “I’m nothing but a storyteller. I just was lucky that I encountered somebody very wise who had been a teacher once before and taught me again late in life ... and then along the way (the talk) sort of morphs into the book that I’m talking about.”

The brisk page-turning novel is set in fictional Coldwater, Mich., with a “Twilight Zone”-ish premise: Several people seem to be getting phone calls from deceased relatives or acquaintances, one of them saying, “The end is not the end” — with varying reactions and a rising intrigue and mystery.
