In Guilford, Shoreline Segway/Characters & Costumes Will Meet Most of Your Halloween Needs
Halloween 2013 is hard upon us. First of all, let's hope it's not as cursed as Halloween 2012 (Superstorm Sandy) and Halloween 2011 (early snowstorm). Then, let's all prepare for the big night—that is, indulge in a spine-tingling experience and decide who we want to dress up as for the requisite parties—by visiting Shoreline Segway and Characters & Costumes.
Two websites, one business—known collectively as R.E.A.D. Amusements—owned by one couple, Eileen and Richard Petrillo. Richard manages the Shoreline Segway tours, which traditionally take riders through historic Guilford, Hammonasset State Park and downtown Mystic. This season, however, he's dreamed up the company's first "haunted" tour, which will bring participants to several different private residences (rich in spooky oral legends), Guilford Town Hall (in which a spirit has allegedly long resided) and the picturesque Guilford Green (under which 1,500 bodies are buried). The tour is about an hour long—plus a preliminary half-hour in which riders practice manipulating the Segways—and can be arranged by contacting the company at (203) 453-6036. Two participants per tour is the minimum (at $70 per person), and the tours must be scheduled during daylight. Thus, says Richard Petrillo, "we don't guarantee any sightings"—but really, isn't it more fun when your imagination can run wild?
Once the tour is over, Eileen Petrillo can help you pick out the perfect getup for your Hallow's Eve revelries, whether you yearn to be pirate or Muppet, 1920s flapper or gangster, a Colonist, cowboy or Native American. Offering both rentals and sales year-round, she has costumes in the thousands and appropriate accessories that go with. Rentals run $25-$75 for three days (pick up the day before, bring back the day after). Characters & Costumes can, too, be contacted at (203) 453-6036.
R.E.A.D. Amusements is a year-round events business, says Eileen Petrillo, designed to help customers with corporate events (including conducting team-building activities), wedding planning, club and community events, fund-raisers, even birthdays and bar mitzvahs. Equipment available for rental includes moonwalks, rock-climbing walls, photo booths and water slides. As of yet, none of these are haunted—to the best of our knowledge. In Guilford, Shoreline Segway/Characters & Costumes Will Meet Most of Your Halloween Needs
