This Thursday, July 18, historic downtown Willimantic will be closing down six blocks of Main Street to celebrate the next installment of its 3rd Thursday Street Fest. From May to September on the third Thursday of each month, Main Street is closed to vehicular traffic as thousands of festivalgoers experience live music, authentic ethnic food and a plethora of shopping options. Willimantic Renaissance Inc., a nonprofit organization, originally created the annual event in 2002 to help revitalize downtown Willimantic. Now in its 10th season, the street festival continues to grow and distinguish the town as a point of attraction for visitors around the state for regional arts, entertainment, and shopping.

July is for jazz this Thursday as dozens of musical groups will be performing on the seven stages throughout the festival. Thousands of people of all ages will enjoy the continuous live music, including a wide variety other musical styles as well. Featured performances include the local Mike Casey Jazz Trio, talented indie solo artist Ben the Sax Guy and 60’s psychedelic jam band Shakedown.

Be sure to come hungry as local eateries and chefs prepare dishes from all over the world—Italian, Mexican, Indian, Puerto Rican and Ukrainian. Along with the authentic cuisine, a drinks menu as diverse as the food will be available including craft beer from local microbreweries. Between the food and music, over 100 area artisans and craftsmen will showcase a variety of handicraft goods and services as well. Together, the festivities provide a creative way for local businesses to get interactive exposure and promote community involvement; the festival is completely run and organized by hard working volunteers.

All the food fun and fun is packed into three hours, so don’t miss a minute from 6 to 9 p.m. Parking and admission are free. For a schedule of events and more information, visit www.willimanicstreetfest.com or call 860-450-0918.
