Grape in the Shade is coming out of the dark.
Those with a sartorial mind know this hidden gem, nestled in the rear of Washington Depot’s Bryan Memorial Plaza, as the great big vintage shop in a narrow little space. It’s a place that specializes in clothing and accessory rarities that for a dozen years has been tucked into a shaded alcove on the other side of the Washington Police Station, an attached storefront that’s not terribly conducive to foot traffic or window shopping.
Not come August. On the first day of that month proprietor JoAnna Lombardi will relocate the store to a freestanding light-box building by the Washington Food Market and the Washington Health Center & Pharmacy.
She couldn’t resist.
“How could I resist?” Ms. Lombardi rhetorically asked. “I had to go for it.”
The move is spurred by fortuitous timing. The airy new space with the daylight conduit picture windows in front was previously home to Matthews Group at William Raveis Real Estate, but the agency recently moved a couple of hundred yards east to Green Hill Plaza. Funny that Grape in the Shade is traveling an equal distance east, but coming from the other side of the shopping district.
