New Haven Native Mark Hummel Brings Harmonica Blues Back to Connecticut in Two Shows

New Haven Native Mark Hummel Brings Harmonica Blues Back to Connecticut in Two Shows

Mark Hummel.

Gotta hand it to California Bay Area blues harp player Mark Hummel: He really knows how to put together a blues show.

Long respected both for his own wicked harmonica chops and his seemingly constant touring, as well as for his ever-changing Blues Harmonica Blowout series that has put some of the best blues harmonica players on earth together on stage throughout the world, Hummel — a New Haven native — appears to work in layers.

This time around — with shows Saturday night on the Island Belle party boat as well as Wednesday night at Bridge Street Live in the Collinsville section of Canton — you get Hummel, wonderful Chicago blues harp player “Billy Boy” Arnold and Rhode Island-via-Stonington harpman “Sugar Ray” Norcia on one stage.

As if that weren’t enough, you’ve got monster Texas blues guitar player Anson Funderburgh AND “Little Charlie” Baty — formerly of Little Charlie and The Nightcats — among those backing them.

This tour, they’re all doing a tribute to the late blues harp immortal Marion “Little Walter” Jacobs to support the recent release of the “Remembering Little Walter” tribute CD on Blind Pig Records. (The harp players are three of the five who recorded the CD, which also features Charlie Musselwhite and James Harman.)

And, yes, on Saturday you get all of that ON A BOAT cruising out in the Housatonic River and Long Island Sound off the coast of Stratford.

The Island Belle boards at the Boardwalk Marina, 955 Ferry Blvd., from 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance at http://theislandbelle.com or call 754-242-7837. Fairfield County’s The Mojomatics, fronted by harp player Manny Foglio, open the show.

For those of you reading this early enough online, Bridge Street Live is at 41 Bridge St. in Collinsville. The show begins at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are $25 and $35, available at www.41bridgestreet.com or call 860-693-9762.

So who is this “Little Walter”?
